According to news from Hanban website, recently Botswana published Friendly Chinese (1st Volume), the first Chinese Textbook in its history. The students in the Chinese classes in the Confucius Institute of Botswana University are now using the Chinese textbooks with distinct local features.
For the long-run planning of the development of local Chinese teaching undertaking, the Confucius Institute of Botswana University got the support from its cooperative university, Shanghai Normal University at which Zhang Xin, a teacher of the Confucius Institute led several teachers to compile the Chinese textbooks that suit the local needs starting from 2009. After several rounds of trial application in the Confucius Institutes and the Chinese classes held in Chinese embassies, the book Friendly Chinese (The 1st volume) was published by an education publisher named Cawley Jim in Gaborone, capital of Botswana this year.
This set of textbooks are targeting at the beginning Chinese learners. The Chinese communication scenes, functions, sentences, characters and the way of presenting learning contents, etc., in the textbooks are arranged accordingly on the basis of the actual needs and acceptable conditions of local Chinese learners.
The compilation and publication of this set of textbooks is an important step made in the process of Chinese teaching localization in Botswana and even the southern Africa. Currently, Friendly Chinese (The 2nd volume) is still in compilation, and is scheduled to publish in 2012.
