As Voice of China’s News and Newspaper Abstract program reports, Zhang Kangkang is contemporary Chinese woman writer, member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and vice president of the Chinese Writers’ Association. She has written many works, including a full-length novel Boundary Line and short story The Rights to Love. She was interviewed by Wen Fei, a reporter from China National Radio.
The reporter: In recent years, more and more people, especially young people, choose to buy books online or e-reading. How do you consider such a development trend?
Zhang Kangkang: I think it’s a great trend or direction in the electronic and economic era.
The reporter: Will you choose to buy books online and e-reading?
Zhang Kangkang: If possible, I’d like to go around in the bookstores where I can find some books.
The reporter: Do you think what kind of influence will buying books online and e-reading have on traditional paper-based books?
Zhang Kangkang: there have actually been enormous impact. The turnover of bookstores has declined sharply, therefore many bookstores face difficulty to survive, which have made all of us worried. I think the book purchasing is a form of cultural activity, and bookstore is a cultural scenery, providing a place for people who love books and are thirsty for knowledge.
The reporter: At the annual NPC and CPPCC sessions in recent years, you keep appeal to the government to support the traditional book industry, and put forward proposals in this regard. Do you think what measures should be taken by the government to support the traditional book industry?
Zhang Kangkang: One of my suggestions was to build at least one bookstore in every place in a few square kilometers. I suggested granting rental subsidy for the bookstores to enable them to survive. Only after solving the problem of survival, can those bookstores find ways to get access to more readers. My second suggestion was to reduce the business tax of bookstores and publishing houses. The tax is very high now, and tax reduction is necessary. When renovating an old city or building a new city, it is neccesary consciously plan a place for the bookstore, and also encourage and support bookstore and publishing industry as well.
