The State Council Information Office initiated the book donation program -- "Window to China" in 2005 which aims to carry forward Chinese culture, help people in other countries to know China better and to raise China's international status and influence. In this program, top-notch domestic publications on Chinese politics, economy, society, history, culture and science are selected and donated to well-known libraries in other countries. If permitted, "Window to China" special donation rooms or stands are set up in foreign libraries.
In 2006, "Window to China" presented Chinese books to 120 libraries in 63 countries, and formed "Window to China" donation special rooms and stands in 10 libraries. According to feedbacks, those donations were popular among readers. Till now, "Window to China" has shaped a clear donation system. The National Library of China mainly donates books to foreign national libraries and public libraries. China Academy of Social Science mainly works with foreign institutes and research organizations. The library of Peking University mainly distributes selected books to foreign university libraries. And local libraries, mainly Shanghai libraries, donate books to the libraries of their partner cities.
"Window to China" focuses on the effect of donate books to foreign libraries. To achieve better fruit, the program changed occasional donation to planned and large scale donation activities. "Window to China" has opened a window for other countries to know further about China.
