Apsaras is the angel in Buddhism, who throwing flowers, playing musical instruments or singing and dancing in the sky when the Buddha is discoursing to show the religious feeding to Buddha. The image of Apsaras spread to central Asia and China from India, and then it diffuse to Korea and Japan and other places. It has formed different art characteristics in different place, reflecting the different nationality's cultural characteristics. The sculpture and painting arts about Apsaras in India, central Asia, China and Japan and other different zones are brief introduced in this book.
Author Profile
Dr. Zhao shengliang was born in Zhao Tong city of Yun Nan province in 1964. He graduated from Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Beijing Normal University in 1984 and received his PhD degree in art history at Seijo University in Japan in 2003. Zhao works in Dunhuang Academy as a researcher and charge for the editorial office of the journal named "Dunhuang Research" now. He has published and edited several books and numerous articles on Dunhuang art. His research is focus on the wall paintings and the scroll calligraphy at art history of Dunhuang.
