The People's Music Publishing House (with the People's Music Audio-visual Publishing House as its subsidiary) is a national publishing institution, which was founded in 1954. The House specializes in publishing Chinese and foreign books on music, music scores, textbooks, reference books and electronic audio-visual products. It devotes itself to collecting China's ancient and modern music works, propagating China's excellent tradition in musical culture and promoting the exchange between the Chinese and foreign musical arts. In recent years, the House has an annual output of over 600 titles of books. By 2005, it has published a total of more than 8750 titles of books and over 750 types of audio-visual products and electronic publications. The primary and middle school music textbooks and reference books edited and published by the House have been widely adopted by the primary and middle schools all over China. A History of Music in the Pre-Qin Dynasty Period, A History of Aesthetics of Chinese Music and The Encyclopedia of Music are representative works.
Hua Yue Publishing House was founded in 1995. It has published over 120 music books such as A Course of Practical Music Theory, An Introduction to Music Scores, An Introduction to Numbered Music Notation, and The Piano Teaching and Coaching for Children.
The People's Music Publishing House publishes three periodicals: The Music Research, The Art of Piano, and The Music Education in China.
