Zhonghua Book Company is a national publishing institution, and also one of the longstanding publishing houses in the history of Chinese publishing. It was founded in January 1912. The Company is mainly involved in the collection and publication of ancient Chinese books and academic works, and it also devotes much energy to the publishing of student’s books, popular readers, dictionaries and books on culture and tourism. Sticking to the goal of propagating the Chinese tradition and serving the academic over the past century, the company has contributed a great deal to the development of academic studies and the spread of traditional Chinese culture.
The Company has an average annual output of 480 titles in recent years, and has altogether published a total of some 18,000 titles. Since 1990, it has introduced 170 titles from abroad and exported about 80 titles of copyright. Publications such as The Zhonghua Grand Dictionary, The Kangxi Dictionary, The Sea of Words, The Major Selections from the Sibu Encyclopedia, All Books Through the Ages, The Collected Works on Oracle Bone Inscriptions, The Twenty-Four Histories, The Historical Events Retold as a Mirror for Government, The Complete Collection of Poetry of the Tang Dynasty, A Newly Selected Series of Words of Ancient Chinese Masters and Basic Series of Chinese Literature Classics- they all have far-reaching influence both at home and abroad.
The Company has four periodicals: Chinese Literature and History, Literature and History, Chinese Heritage, and Zhonghua Loose-leaf Selections of Writings.
