On April 29, 2005, Chongqing Publishing Group was established on the basis of the former Chongqing Publishing House, a leading publisher for 55 years, which published about 800 new titles of books every year. As a large-scale cultural enterprise, the Group engages itself in books, newspapers and journals, electronic and audio-video products, and Internet publishing, with its business covering paper trade, printing, distribution, advertisement, tourism and real estate as well.
Among its 600 staff members, about one-third is working in publishing business. The Group owns 7 publishing centres, namely the centre of Education, centre of Social Sciences, centre of Literature, centre of Children's Books, centre of Science & Technology and centre of Arts and Major Publishing Projects. It also owns 4 publishing branches respectively in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.
Chongqing Publishing Group has established extensive relationship with dozens of countries and regions in the fields of copyright trade and co-publishing. In 2005, the Group, as the only representative publisher in China, joined the international publishing project of The Myths, which included 37 major publishers in more than twenty countries. The German edition of BI NU, the Legend of Meng Jiangnu, the first foreign edition of the Chinese myth works by Mr. Su Tong, will be launched in the 2006 Frankfurt International Book Fair.
Other major projects such as Discover China and Chinese Leading Scholar's Series on China and the World are popular with overseas publishers. The Group has also reached agreement with Penguin Group (China) for co-publishing Penguin Classic Books.
