A Model Textbook for Teaching Interactive Oral Chinese

A Review of Interactive Spoken Chinese series (published by FLTRP)

Oral teaching is quite important for the whole Chinese teaching system. It is a bridge for foreign students to practice from the textbook. Spoken ability is the most important standard of the student’s language competence. 95% percent of those foreign students studying in China consider that strengthening of the oral skills is what they need most.

The improvement of the spoken ability requires good teaching materials for oral practice. In traditional oral teaching materials, teachers and textbooks play the major role. Students only get what the teacher transfers and respond according to fixed requirements. It has been approved that traditional oral teaching materials only improve students’ spoken ability to a limited extent. New spoken Chinese teaching materials advocates the interaction between the teacher and the student, the student and the society, and also among the students.

Interactive Spoken Chinese series published by FLTRP is the outstanding one among new interactive oral teaching materials. It is compiled by experienced CLT (Chinese Language Teaching) teachers home and abroad. Its compiling model, teaching methodology and practice all represent its interactive features, as follows:

1. Interaction between teachers and students

The relationship between teachers and students show the difference between traditional and new teaching models. In the new teaching model, all teaching activities focus on the communication of students. Teacher is no longer the centre of teaching. Interactive Spoken Chinese series use lots of humorous cartoon to tell the story, which is one of the most welcome learning methods for foreign students.

2. Interaction among students

Practice is important for language learning. The exercises in the series provide all kinds of interactive exercises for the students to use. Many exercises not only aim to improve the spoken ability of the student, but also motivate the cooperation and competition between the students.

3. Interaction between students and the society

For Chinese language learning, classroom is the major environment while the society is the background. What has been learned in the classroom need to be used in the actual social life. The topics in this series are all closely related to the social life, such as celebrities and fashion, love, contemporary China and modern Chinese life. Students are very interested in these topics and after learning those in the classroom can then practice more in real life.

The series includes CD and MP3 closely related to the textbooks and exercises, which can help the student to learn by themselves. It also develops on-line teaching platform for students to learn online: www.chineseplus.cn / www.chinesetone.org.(By Zhao jing)
