Display Strategic Thinking of Science and Technology Development in China

——A Review of Roadmap to 2050: Strategic General Report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (English edition)(published by Sciences Press)

At the 61st Frankfurt Book Fair, China Science Publishing Group and Germany’s Springer Group successfully released Roadmap to 2050: Strategic General Report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (English edition) to show the world the strategic thinking of China’s scientists in promoting socio-economic development relying on technological innovation. This attracted broad attention.

The series of reports is funded by the Project for Translation and Publication of Chinese Cultural Works and is the crystal of the major scientific research project of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is conducted under the leadership of Mr. Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of National People’s Congress of the PRC and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2007, the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched this project to provide systematic and scientific advices on three goals, namely to safeguard sustainable economic development and enhancement of competitiveness, to promote sustained harmonious development of the society, and to maintain ecological environment evolution in harmony with human society. The research finally produced the Strategic Research Report on the Roadmap to 2050 for China’s Science and Technology Development in 18 Areas. Based on this result, President Lu Yongxiang led and drafted the general report on Facing the Challenge of New Science and Technology Revolution and Supporting Scientific and Sustainable Development.

The project is large in investment with many experts, scholars and institutions participating in the research. The research project gathered more than 300 specialists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including nearly 60 academicians and involving more than 80 institutes. The series is composed of 18 areas and one general report and is published both in Chinese and English with 36 volumes. Therefore, Science Press organized a leading group, invested a large sum of money and assigned senior editors for the project management.

Collaborating with Springer Group, Science Press endeavored to publish the English edition, which was first released at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, effectively promoting the cooperation and exchange of China’s foreign science, technology and culture. This facilitates advancing the influence of China’s scientists and enhancing their discourse power in future science and technology pattern in the world. The global release and widespread this series in English edition will provide an important academic reference for the world’s scientific community to understand China’s science and technology development. It is another successful example for the cooperation between Chinese international science and technology publishing industries and also one of the key projects for Chinese publishing industry’s “going abroad” strategy.
