Chinese gov't donates books to overseas Chinese in Houston

HOUSTON, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Consulate General in Houston on Saturday donated about 1,000 books to the Chinese community in the city.

A donation ceremony was held at the Chinese Civic Center in Houston, Texas, for officials from the Chinese Consulate General to present the books to the library at the center.

The books include classic Chinese literature such as the Three Kindoms, books on ancient Chinese poems and dictionaries, among others.

Gao Yanping, the Chinese Consul General in Houston, said the donation of books is a way for the Chinese government to extend its support to and care for overseas Chinese.

Books are also the best way to spread Chinese culture among overseas Chinese, Gao said.

Representatives of overseas Chinese in Houston expressed their love for the Chinese culture and origin, and thanked the Chinese government for the donation.

The book-donation is an annual event, with about 16,000 books having been given by the Chinese government to the library of the Chinese Civic Center.
