Contents Briefing

Compared with the Greek mythology in western countries, the magnificent as well as miraculous Chinese mythical stories are also a great treasure for eastern countries. Chinese mythical stories originate from the ancient times and are handed down from generations to generations with the development of the five-thousand-years history and civilization of China. Chinese mythical stories are full of imagination and love for life, such as the story of world creation: After Pan Gu separated the heaven from the earth, the air he breathed forth became the wind and the sound he made became the thunder. Upon his death, his eyes became the sun and the moon, body became the mountains and blood became the rivers. He enriched and beautify the newly-born world by using his own body, therefore he was respected by the people as the God Creator. Another Goodness Creator is Nu Wa, who created the people by yellow earth, and established the marriage system for the people so that man and woman are able to marry each other and reproduce. Hence, she is respected by the people as the Goodness of Marriage and the mother of the Chinese people. The Jade Emperor took charge of the Court of Heaven and authorized immortal beings to perform their own functions. Plus, Sheng Nung invented the agriculture and medicine and Cang Jie created Chinese characters, so the order of man’s world was established hereafter. Chinese mythical stories also have deeds of the heroes: Yellow Emperor led people in defeating the brutal forces led by the warrior Chi You; Da Yu controlled the flood disaster; Hou Yi shot down the ten suns in the sky with bow and arrow…… There are also love stories read through all ages in the Chinese mythology: Falling in love with each other, the Weaving Maid living in the sky and the Cowherd on earth got married secretly regardless of the Heaven's commandment that the immortal beings shall not get marry with mortals. After knowing this, the Lady Queen Mother in the Heaven broke up the couple. Reluctant to separate with Weaving Maid, the Cowherd traced her to the sky after gong through many hardships but the Milky Way eventually partitioned them off, leaving them weeping on each of the Milky Way. Moved by their story, thousands of magpies flocked together to form a bridge for them to meet each other. This is where the Chinese Valentine’s Day came from…… The Cartoon Chinese Mythology has 10 books which contains dozens of classical mythical stories best-loved by the people. The pictures of the books are drawn by the Korean cartoonist Chun Chang-Jin. With exquisite and beautiful pictures and simple and compact stories, the book series enable the readers to learn the classics of Chinese culture via pleasant visual aesthetic appreciation and perceive the essence of Chinese history and culture via dialogue between soul and wisdom.
