For decades, countries around the globe have experienced an increasing wave of Chinese immigration. How do these people live there? And so they experience culture shock?
To gain some insight into their lives, we can look at some examples of overseas Chinese literature. We did that recently at the International Symposium on Chinese Canadian Literature in Toronto.
Over 50 scholars and writers from China and Canada have had fruitful discussions centered around Chinese culture and identity acknowledgement of overseas Chinese. They also discussed interrelations between ethnic groups, and compared Chinese literature in Canada and other countries.
Canada has one of the most active overseas Chinese literature movements. Works by many Chinese Canadian writers are well received not only by the general public, but also in academic circles.
As a symbol of Canada's diversity, Chinese culture, especially Chinese literature, is gaining more and more appreciation.
