The Beijing Dipper Books Co Ltd recently introduced the PIXI pocket cartoon book to China, with the authorization of the German firm Carlsen. In the Chinese market, the books are published by the Guizhou People's Publishing House.
The first batch of Pixi books includes the series Pixi’s Pirate Box, Brushing Your Teeth with Pixi, Starting School with Pixi, Pixi’s Fairy Tale Treasure Trove, Discover the World, and Pixi’s Magic Circus, each with eight books, for a total of 48 books. These series cover favorite topics for children above three, providing knowledge in science, nature, psychology, psychology, fairy tales, education and daily living. There is a fun game that comes along with every book. Pixi has gained popularity in 15 countries and regions (including Taiwan) with annual sales of 12 million books and total sales of more than 300 million books.
In each Pixi series, all eight books are grouped under one subject, and every book contains a story. The 1.1-meter-tall Pixi doll with a treasure box in hand is a classic marketing tool for the books, and there are colorful books in every treasure box. The height of box is perfect for children to open.
Pixi first met with young readers with the first Pixi book’s publishing in Germany in 1954. German publisher Carlsen always wanted to provide readers with high-quality picture books and thus designed a format of 10-by-10 centimeters, naming it as Pixi, or “elf” in English.(Zhang Lin)
