On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Library, the National Library of China (NLC) and the Department of Culture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region achieved an agreement on co-developing Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Branch of National Digital Library of China (hereinafter referred to as NDLC Xinjiang Branch). On 20 August, the NDLC Xinjiang Branch was launched officially in Urumqi. Leaders from different institutions attended the celebration ceremony of the 80th anniversary of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Library, and launched the NDLC Xinjiang Branch, including Gao shuxun, a member of the Ministerial CPC Committee of the Ministry of Culture and minister assistant of the Ministry of Culture, Zhou Heping, NLC director, Li Yi, director of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party in Xinjiang, Du Qinrui, deputy director of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region People's Congress, Tieliwardy Abdurexit, vice chairmen of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ke Li, People's Political Consultative Conference of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and so on.
The predecessor of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Library is Xinjiang Provincial Library established in August 1930. With 80 years development, the overall conditions of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Library are improved on and on, the library collections are increased day by day, and service standards are advanced continuously, forming a modern public library which features Xinjiang ethnic minorities' languages collections and local documents, pays equal attention to paper collections and digital resources, and develops traditional services and digitalized services simultaneously, becoming the important regional infrastructure of national public culture services system and an important part of national literature information guarantee system which provides information resources guarantee for economic, cultural and social development of Xinjiang.
The NDLC Xinjiang Branch is the 16th branch of National Digital Library of China, and the first branch in northwest region. As the basic resources for opening the NDLC Xinjiang Branch, the NLC elaborately selects 4 TB digital resources and delivers these resources to the NDLC Xinjiang Branch, including 125,000 titles of E-books, 4000 titles of E-journals, 900-hour video resources, and 40,000 digital images. Among those resources, ethnic minorities' languages resources include 550 titles of E-books, 12 titles of E-journals (138 issues) and 100 episodes of video resources. The website of NDLC Xinjiang Branch is in Chinese and Uyghur, providing browse and retrieval services of digital resources.
The NDLC Xinjiang Branch is another important action for supporting the cultural development in Xinjiang since the launching of County-level Digital Library Aid Program for Xinjiang by the Ministry of Culture in June. The implementation of County-level Digital Library Aid Program for Xinjiang makes the county-level libraries in Xinjiang have the ability of providing digitalized services, while the NDLC Xinjiang Branch, based on the abundant digital resources and information infrastructure of National Digital Library of China, with Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Library as base, will play its regional demonstrative and leading roles, establish a digital library service network covering Xinjiang, deploy digital resources delivery service and public culture services, make the featured resources in Xinjiang be understood by people all over China, and provide intellectual support and resources guarantee for the development of public culture service system and digital culture infrastructure.
