In August 2010, about 1.1 million of the National Library of China (NLC) western records were added to OCLC Worldcat, which richened the NLC's bibliographic data resources in OCLC Worldcat, and revealed the NLC's foreign language collections. With the continuous uploading of the NLC records, based on the OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Network, people all over the world can share more and more NLC collections, and appreciate the culture heritage of China.
OCLC, i.e. Online Computer Library Center, is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs. More than 72,000 libraries in 171 countries and territories use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials.
Through the efforts of the NLC and OCLC, they signed the records cooperation agreement in 2008. According to the agreement, 2.3 million Chinese records had been finished switching from CNMARC format to MARC21 format by the end of 2008, and added to OCLC Worldcat, which took the first step for Chinese records to go abroad, and promoted the internationalization of Chinese documents cataloguing.
Base on the uploading of bibliographic data, the NLC took part in OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Network officially in 2010. After that, through repeated testing, modification and debugging, the NLC finished uploading these 1.1 million western records.
Through the OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Network, readers in China can easily acquire information from about 20,000 first-class member libraries, especially satisfying educators' and researchers' demands for high-quality master papers, doctor papers and articles. In addition, this Network also improves the NLC's interlibrary loan service quality and efficiency, and achieves the sharing of NLC collections in the worldwide.
