The conference of "Getting Closer to Japan" and concurrent news release of <The Series of Reading Japan>, sponsored by Social Sciences Academic Press was held in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences recently. The project of "The Series of Reading Japan,” jointly initiated by Social Sciences Academic Press and Sasakawa Peace Foundation, is scheduled to translate and introduce 100 titles of Japanese books to China in ten years or so, which cover Japan's various fields of politics, economics and culture, etc., expecting to make the Chinese public learn about Japan's social life & culture in an accurate, all-round way.
Xie Shouguang, president of Social Sciences Academic Press said, the reason for initiating to publish <Reading Japan Series is that Japan> is a country which seems familiar but in fact strange to the Chinese general public. Sino-Japan exchange can be dated back to the ancient times. Nevertheless, It should not to ignore the fact that there are constant frictions on a wide range of issues between China and Japan in recent years, and an increasing trend of disgusting with each other between peoples of both countries. The long-term estrangement and misunderstanding is the reason for the feeling of "disgusting with each other."
It's learnt that the book titles are recommended and selected annually by a book selection committee comprised of Japanese and Chinese experts. So far, in light of the project, five titles of books were published, i.e. The Popular Culture in Post-War Japan, Fuji Mountain and the Japanese People, Local Self-Government in Japan, History of the Japanese Culture, 50 Years of Cartoon and Animation in Post-war Japan.
