The 17th Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) opened at 9 a.m. on Aug. 30. Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman, the NPC Standing Committee, Liu Binjie, administrator of GAPP, and Bipan Chandra, Chairman, National Book Trust (NBT), India, presented the opening ceremony. It's the highest-level opening ceremony ever held since the initiation of the BIBF.
As one of the four great countries with an ancient civilization, India took part in the fair as the Country of Honor. India organized 25 publishing houses (presses) and 20 writers (most of whom are writers researching on Rabindranath Tagore) to attend the event. Besides strengthening exchanges with Chinese publishing counterparts, Indian writers will also hold a series of seminars surrounding their works. Thematic exhibitions on the Buddha, Rabindranath Tagore, and Jawaharlal Nehru, who witnessed the establishment of China-India diplomatic ties, are concurrently held during the BIBF.
As the Country of Honor, India not only brings about research achievements and works on Buddha and Rabindranath Tagore, but also adds the unique South Asian flavor to the BIBF.
This session of BIBF which will last five day from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 is held in the China International Exhibition Center. At the fair, 1,841 domestic and overseas publishing entities from 58 countries and regions gather together in Beijing, holding more than 1,000 cultural activities, and exhibiting around 200,000 titles of excellent books.
